Your Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has combo jacks, accepting a microphone signal on an XLR plug or a Line input on a TRS jack. You will use the jack inputs. If you use a pair of 3-conductor cables, with TRS jack plugs, you will get a balanced connection. If you use a 2-conductor cable with TS jack plugs you will get an unbalanced one.

I would go a little further and assert that they outshine the built-in pre's that come with USB devices all the way up to the $650 price range; starting with the Sound Devices USBPre2.

The mic gain controls have only 36dB of range, which is a bit weak for an audio interface in this price range. For comparison's sake, my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 has 48-50dB.
